Thomas Mann House丨Occhio Reilluminates a Historic Los Angeles Residence
The Thomas Mann House was the American residence of Thomas Mann, the renowned German novelist and essayist. Since its acquisition by the German government in 2016, the villa has undergone a comprehensive renovation to host the Villa Aurora & Thomas Mann House e. v. scholarship program for outstanding scholars in culture, politics, economics, media, and science.
In collaboration with other German architectural firms, Occhio contributed to the 2018 renovation, thoroughly restoring the historic building and making a significant contribution to the villa’s exemplary interior design in Los Angeles.
Built in 1942, the Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles was home to Mann and his family for a decade. It was also a gathering place for numerous German artists and intellectuals, including Theodor Adorno, Albert Einstein, and Bertolt Brecht. Today, it returns to the public in a refreshed yet familiar state.
Capturing the Essence
The villa’s restoration was inspired by the principle of “form follows function,” a hallmark of decades of classic German design. Transplanted into a Californian residence, this approach creates a timeless and welcoming space.
The interior design emphasizes openness. Architects carefully selected materials and design approaches that highlight the house’s unique characteristics.
With its enduring design, high-quality finishes, and thoughtfully conceived lighting, Occhio complements the villa’s architecture, enabling the historic Thomas Mann House to integrate seamlessly with the present.
Light Creates Movement
Sento verticale wall luminaires in the corridors highlight individual architectural elements. Customizable upward and downward diffused beams create stunning wall “canvases” of light.
Light and Shadow
Più R ceiling spotlights provide glare-free illumination throughout rooms and corridors. The signature beams of Occhio lighting, along with dynamic light-and-shadow effects on the walls, bring vitality and movement to each space.
Warmth and Elegance
In the library area, extensive use of wood was intentionally integrated to create a serene and relaxing environment.
Soft light reflected from honey-colored wooden shelves further enhances the cozy, leisurely ambiance of the space.
"We are very proud to contribute to a project of such significant cultural importance." — Axel Meise
