Julie Neill has made quite the splash in the interiors industry over the last decade. As a New Orleans-based lighting designer, Julie knew this was her calling after designing her first piece of custom lighting; since then, her intricate fixtures have inspired many a room (and many a designer!) It is both the art and the craft of creating custom lighting that is her passion and her life’s work. Neill draws each design by hand and oversees the finishing of each piece, which results in a beautiful artisan-made fixture, skillfully crafted and carefully rendered in her New Orleans studio. Each piece is handmade, so every piece is truly unique.

The multitude of hand-applied finishes is another distinguishing characteristic of Julie Neill’s designs. In addition to custom finishes, there is an array of “signature finishes” that have been developed through a combination of ancient techniques such as gilding, paint layering, powdered pigments, gesso, and wax. There’s no limit to how many variations on gold, silver, or other hues she has available either. “If we create a new combination that looks really good, we’re going to add it,” she explains.
Neill said the process she enjoys the most is designing new lighting fixtures for Visual Comfort, a company that licenses her original designs. “All my lighting designs start out as pieces of sculpture that are meant to be lit and hung from a ceiling, or on a sconce on a wall,” she said. “They all start out as a piece of sculpture in my mind, and then they become a useful item.”
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
Ever since she was a little girl, New Orleans born and bred Neill has been intrigued with design. “I made doll houses out of my bookcases as a child. I even made doll furniture,” she relates. When someone gave her mom carpet samples, Neill immediately put them to creative use. “I can make chandeliers out of the twist-ties that close a bag of bread,” she laughs. For this Fine Art major and decorative painter, no material is off limits – and her clients know it.
She took interior design classes after graduating from Agnes Scott College in Georgia and began working at an interior design firm. “So many clients were looking for something [they could picture in their minds] that they couldn’t find, but I knew I could make it for them! That’s when I began making customers’ pieces.”
For lighting designer Julie Neill, everything begins and ends as a work of art. Neill already had a fine arts degree when she enrolled at Delgado University to study drafting. While there, she happened to take an interior design course for fun, and she was hooked.Later,as an interior designer, Neill was asked to create a custom lighting fixture for a showhouse. That initial piece was so well received that Neill soon found herself devoted solely to lighting design, but she never really left the art world behind.
DESIGN THINKING-
“A great interior doesn’t rely on the furnishings, the décor, or the drapery; it relies on how well the architecture of the space and the interior design elements speak to one another.”
“Lighting is perhaps the single most transformative element in any environment. Its power to illuminate and animate—literally—shapes how we experience our surroundings,” Flanigan explains.
A space can be completely transformed with proper lighting. I recommend layering lighting types so you can adjust the room’s brightness depending on your task and the time of day. I incorporate recessed lights, pendants, and wall lights, etc., so the atmosphere can change with the flip of the switch.
Each and every one of us has a distinct, original trait that expresses our personality and marks our identity. It might be the way we laugh or the quirk of an eyebrow that makes us unique and unforgettable. We all need something like this in our homes as well—a feature that establishes an unmistakable quality of individuality. It might be a striking painting or sculpture. Perhaps it’s a floating staircase that appears to levitate upward through a serene entrance hall or an object so exquisitely crafted from extraordinary material that it inspires wonder.
“I grew up in New Orleans and I’m sure that's where my passion for beautiful things was born. I’ve always been inspired by the creative spirit that gave birth to this exquisite, historic and unique city. The tropical climate, the picturesque architecture and the off-beat way of life are an unending source of inspiration to me.”
The same is true for Giacometti, who has also been a huge influence on mydesign acsthetic. His furniture and lighting are the ultimate in classicallyinspired modernism. The first time I saw his plaster lighting in the Picasso Museum in Paris,I felt the Earth move.
We believe in the transformative power of hand crafted lighting. Deeply respectful of the tradition of artisan made objects, it is our mission to create lighting of exquisite craftsmanship and lasting beauty.Marrying age old techniques with a modern sensibility, our artists revel in the crafting process which results in the beautiful lighting we are known for.
