She founded her firm in 2010 after shifting from architecture to design for the closer relationship it allows with her clients and the ability to touch every detail of a home. “I love to see the complete picture, from the beginning to placing the final piece of art,” she says.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
Marie Flanigan was actually born in Michigan, then moved to Connecticut and then to Texas when she was in first grade. She grew up in a small Texas town and always felt drawn to the visual arts. Marie had a very artistic family, she brothers and sisters are musically talented, but she gravitated towards the visual expression, and when she was young, her dad would take her on a trip to our little local art gallery every month. As Marie grew, she became interested in architecture and ended up studying that while at Texas A&M University. she was hired right out of school to work for one of my professors, then moved to Houston and eventually took a job at a small firm that managed both interior and construction. While there, she fell in love with interior design and decided it was time to make the switch.
Marie got her MBA from the University of Houston and started her own interior design company 12 years ago.As principal and owner of Marie Flanigan Interiors, she leads a team of professionals that handles projects throughout Texas and the United States. The firm has earned a bevy of awards and recognition, including being named High Point Market Style Spotter and Houston Design Center Leader in Design, along with features in Traditional Home Magazine's "Rising Star of Design"and Modern Luxury Interiors'"Best of Design"and PaperCity's Design Award.
DESIGN THINKING-
“A great interior doesn’t rely on the furnishings, the décor, or the drapery; it relies on how well the architecture of the space and the interior design elements speak to one another.”
“Lighting is perhaps the single most transformative element in any environment. Its power to illuminate and animate—literally—shapes how we experience our surroundings,” Flanigan explains.
A space can be completely transformed with proper lighting. I recommend layering lighting types so you can adjust the room’s brightness depending on your task and the time of day. I incorporate recessed lights, pendants, and wall lights, etc., so the atmosphere can change with the flip of the switch.
Each and every one of us has a distinct, original trait that expresses our personality and marks our identity. It might be the way we laugh or the quirk of an eyebrow that makes us unique and unforgettable. We all need something like this in our homes as well—a feature that establishes an unmistakable quality of individuality. It might be a striking painting or sculpture. Perhaps it’s a floating staircase that appears to levitate upward through a serene entrance hall or an object so exquisitely crafted from extraordinary material that it inspires wonder.
